The Lighting Singularity is Near: Accelerating Toward a Brighter Future

The singularity refers to a moment in time when technological innovation occurs so rapidly, it is incomprehensible. Humans inherently understand and falsely project technological advancements as linear growth. However, most technological evolutions are actually advancing exponentially, as seen in the Moore's Law trend. Lighting is no exception. This can be seen from the use of fire to the beginnings of electric lighting, to the current efficacies of LED sources and the recent LPD reductions in current energy conservation codes. Light sources used for millennia were all flame based, with viable electric lighting only being available for the last ~200 years. From the first electric lamp, it took close to 80 years to have a viable incandescent light for commercial use. Lighting technology has continued to improve to today’s available sources. We are now at a point where our current LED technology is 20x as efficacious as traditional incandescent sources, and have 50+x longer lifespan. Within the last 10 years alone, LED efficacies have doubled. What is next? And how quickly will be get there? This presentation will explore the history of the tools of lighting, and their trajectory toward the lighting singularity.

Illuminating Color - Revealing the complexities of color, science and design

Color plays a critical role in our perception of the built environment and how we feel about the spaces we inhabit. It affects what we consciously perceive, things we like, and how we feel. It helps us understand how to move through spaces and enhances our experiences. Color has profound impacts on our subconscious, affecting our decision making and buying habits in ways we may not be fully aware of. Lighting, the mechanism by which we are able to perceive color, plays a pivotal role in how we experience and feel about the colors around us. This seminar will present a study of color, introducing various chromatic philosophies and discussing how color shows up in everything from literature to marketing to the built environment.

Light Justice: Everyone Deserves Good Lighting and Beneficial Darkness

Everyone deserves quality lighting indoors.  This talk will address lighting equity in sustainable and healthy interior spaces.   It examines the causes and characteristics of poor quality interior lighting, including the lack of access to daylight and views, restorative darkness, and quality lighting design in places that house and serve people from marginalized communities.   This talk is a further exploration into the intersection of lighting and environmental justice, by exploring the history, practice and case studies of interior lighting for under-served communities.  This talk will answer these key questions: How can we bring quality indoor lighting to everyone?  What are the barriers to everyone having quality lighting?  What are examples of quality lighting that is accessible and affordable  to everyone?  This talk will be backed by data, research and case studies by practitioners who has been able to have a significant impact on the spaces used and enjoyed by under-served communities.

Designing with TM-30

IES TM-30 has been available since 2015 and has been subjected to rigorous review and experimentation. It is now an American National Standard (ANSI) document, and the underlying calculation framework is shared with CIE 224:2017.  TM-30 is now used in the WELL Building Standard, the United State Department of Defense Unified Facilities Criteria for Medical Facilities, the DLC Performance Standard v5.0, and ASHRAE 189.1. IES TM-30 did not initially provide recommendations on how the method should be used to specify color rendition. Such guidance is now provided in IES TM-30 Annex E, which is the focus of this presentation.

This presentation will explain how specifiers can use ANSI/IES TM-30 Annex E for specifying light source color rendition using a system that is easy to use and understand. We will review the Design Intents of Preference (P), Vividness (V), and Fidelity (F) and demonstrate light sources that fall into each category. The focus will be on selecting appropriate criteria for various applications and on TM-30 related deliverables at each phase of the design process. A live, immersive demonstration will be provided.

Civic Daylight for NYC’s Straphanger: NYC’s Fulton St Transit Hub

Architect and daylighting consultant Davidson Norris will discuss the Fulton St Transit Center, where its signature Sky Reflector Net uses reflection to “bring the sky down” and into the experience of the deeply subterranean subway user and then uses reflection again to offer that same subway user an equally unexpected “let the eye out” view of the sky.
To “bring the sky down”, we created a glass oculus to continuously admitted diffuse skylight or direct sunlight. Below the oculus we hung a hemispherical field of reflective aluminum panels clipped to a lightweight cable net. Fine tuning the double curved cable net geometry allowed us to reflect unexpected images of sunlight on subway circulation paths.

The Net’s secondary goal was to “let the eye out”. When users, confronted by sunlight patches three levels below grade, looked up to source it, they not only had a direct view of the sky through the oculus, but also an expanded panoramic view of the surrounding cityscape as reflected off the net’s upper field of aluminum panels.

Luminaire-Aware Design Competition with IES Dallas

Inspired by the popular IES LIGHTEN UP! Luminaire Competition, IES Dallas has partnered with ArchLIGHT Summit on a lightning fast luminaire design and build challenge pitting teams against one another to conceive and create a fixture on the spot. Armed with craft materials and tools, along with various light sources, you will be guided by leaders from IES Dallas as small groups design around the theme of sustainability, a tie-in with this year’s ArchLIGHT Summit art installation AWARE.

Participant timeline:
  • 11:30 - 12: Lunch provided
  • 12 - 12:30: Team meetups for project drafting
  • 12:30: Competition begins
All ArchLIGHT Summit attendees and exhibitors are welcome to watch this fast-paced exercise unfold in front of the Light Bites stage while IES Dallas President Dean Brockob gives the play by play. Everyone who signs up here will be assigned to a team to actively participate in the competition.

Following the event, the finished fixtures will be on display in the IES Dallas booth (#232) for judging by a panel of experts, plus there will be a People’s Choice winner as voted by ArchLIGHT Summit attendees during the remainder of the show. Prizes will be awarded to the winning teams, not mention bragging rights.
Note: If you sign up for this session, we will have a special lunch set aside for you starting at 11:30am in Trade Mart 2800 on the second floor (just up the rear escalators from the show floor). That will also be an opportunity for teams to huddle and strategize before the competition begins in front of the Light Bites stage at 12:30pm.

Plan for Success! How to create a Control Intent Narratives and Sequence of Operations

Current lighting design practice requires designers to consider both the visual environment they are creating and to delve into the operational characteristics of the systems being installed. Designers need to be able to articulate their vision of how the systems they design will work and how they will interact with adjacent building systems. Increasing stringency in energy codes has contributed to this trend and design teams now often find themselves faced with questions of how to create a level of interoperability that was not so commonplace in the recent past.

Fortunately, the tools exist to articulate both the designer’s intent and the specific steps required to achieve that intent. By examining the development process behind the Control Intent Narrative and the Sequence of Operations, this course will provide a look at the steps for assembling these documents and specific examples of language that is both clear and contractually enforceable.

Factoring Sustainability Into Your Firm's Specification Process - The Lighting Practice

Lighting designers have a responsibility to implement sustainable practices into their work through not just design, but specification as well. Ratings systems, like LEED, provide material sourcing guidelines for many building materials. However, they do not typically do so for luminaires or other lighting system components.  Practices such as specifying manufacturers and materials regional to the project site, choosing fixtures made of sustainable materials, and opting for manufacturers who operate using sustainable practices are the designer’s responsibility in the end. Alongside the collective efforts of the project team, participants will understand how standardizing these practices within their organization can help reduce the environmental impact of a project.

When specifying fixtures and sourcing lighting materials for a project, designers can have their carefully specified sustainable fixtures get value-engineered. From this presentation, attendees will understand how to gain buy-in from project owners, architects, and contractors, to protect the sustainably specified fixtures and design.

These practices will improve an organization’s understanding of sustainable specification, lead to a standardized approach to sustainable design within a firm, and focus designers’ careers toward a more sustainable future.

Top 10 Most Surprising Things that Impact Lighting

Who remembers David Letterman’s popular Top Ten lists? If you do, you’re probably old. That’s just one of the things you will learn in this light-hearted, but thought-provoking presentation. In The Ten Most Surprising Things Which Impact Lighting (or, Should You Tell Your Lighting Designer?) we will address why items like carpet color and wall texture are important considerations for lighting design. If the three rules of real estate are location, location, location, then the three rules of lighting design are coordination, coordination, coordination. Packed with illustrations, this presentation makes the case for keeping the lighting designer informed of nearly every design decision.

----------------
Lovers of Light (LoL) is a lighting industry panel point/counter point debate tackling important lighting topics in a lighthearted gameshow format. This session will be the square off between 6 contestants. The contestants will consist of manufacturers, designers and sales representatives and be paired prior to the show to select their topic of debate. Typical topics include: Light and Health - the new future of lighting or still too early; Dark Sky – Do dark sky design requirements create a better outdoor design; credentials – do they matter? Each one of the pair will have 2 minutes to address their side of the topic. After the debate, the other contestants will provide a 1-minute comment then select who they agree with, providing a point to the contestant. The topic will then be thrown to the audience for them to weigh in on the topic. After a 5-minute audience participation session, an applause-o-meter will be used to select which side they agree with along with 5 points. This sequence will happen for each pair. A lightning round will follow with similar sequence but randomized topics and shorter response times. As previously mentioned, this can be a bunch of fun but get some serious dialog going on the industry hot topics.
  • Gain insight into both pro and con sides of 6 topics relating to the lighting industry.
  • Audience will have the opportunity to participate in the debate by voting and or commenting on the debate topics.
  • Topics will include both technical and business-related items. The debate will help the audience form opinions on technology related to products and specifications and develop strategies to help grow their business.
  • Audience will gain insight on topics from a cross channel perspective with the panel consisting of Manufacturers, Specifiers and independent sales agents.

The Company Scorecard: What Companies Do to Retain Parents

Before the pandemic, retaining women talent in the lighting industry was strained. Women enter the workforce in the same capacity as their male counterparts. Yet if you look at company leadership, women are under-represented. At the 2018 IALD Enlighten conference presentation, the question was posed: Why do women leave lighting design? The presentation revealed most women leaving were mothers, and they left because their high demanding career collided with their seemingly insurmountable parental responsibilities. Fast forward to September 2020, the whole country took note when over 850,000 women dropped out of the workforce. It became clear during the pandemic that schools were moving to online only learning. In a moment of intense pressure, mothers stepped away from their salaries, careers, and stability to teach America's future generations. As author Reshma Saujauni puts it, "The pandemic had finally exposed the silent expectations placed on American working women, revealing them as painfully contradictory and completely impossible to meet." It's time to take a step back and evaluate how the lighting industry is supporting and retaining the valuable talent of working parents. Four years later, we will follow up with the question posed to employers: How do you support working parents? Like the 2018 IALD presentation, we will gather and present a series of survey responses from employers to understand their point of view, strategies, and positive results in keeping parents on the payroll. The survey will be anonymous to encourage honest responses.

Intercultural Intelligence: How to Turn Cultural Difference Into a Key Added Value Within a Lighting Project.

Today work environment is more multicultural than ever: spatial limits have been blown out, encouraging people and ideas mobility all around the globe. Indeed, opportunities to design with culturally diverse team workers, clients, or end-users, have become within everyone's reach.

We enjoy learning about distinct civilizations while traveling abroad but when it comes to business, we often take for granted that our own work methodology will be generic enough to federate each party and cover the project needs. However, are we not missing fundamental information by not tailoring a strategy inclusive with each one's differences?

This session will assess from their concept stage to completion, three large scale lighting projects, successively developed by a French lighting studio, a Vietnamese lighting studio and an Australian Engineering company. All these study cases are based in Vietnam, one of the most dynamic markets in the Asia-Pacific region and where the construction industry is equally led by local and international consultants. Core criteria such as lighting standard reference, service scope, communication tools, internal team organization, delivery package content, key priorities, client and third parties' relationship will help to cross-check the strengths and weaknesses of each situation and identify how the cultural differences have influenced the design output.

Afterward, an introduction to Intercultural Intelligence concept will reveal how, by following a specific work methodology, we can generate significant benefits for individuals, teams, and companies. The selected projects will help to illustrate how to adjust toolkit and mindset throughout the design process to not only avoid major mistakes but also discover how cultural difference can be turned as a key added within a project. We will also define the limits of this exercise and the potential risks of counterproductive effects it can create.

You’ve got a friend in DMX

Today’s designers go big. They design multi-zoned, multi-layered, multi-colored lighting systems that deliver multiple scenes adhering to multiple regulations over multiple hours. And yet they’re still frightened by Digital Multiplex. This session aims to dispel the myths, misconceptions, and mistaken ideas around DMX, while providing a solid basis of what DMX can do and is capable of.

Myth: DMX is complicated.
Fact: Systems are complicated. They have to be to adhere to numerous codes and fit the design brief. We’ll show just how simple DMX is, how one standard can solve a multitude of different requirements, and how its strength as a standard means it responds the same around the world. Program it anywhere, it will work everywhere, from California to Kuala Lumpur.

Myth: DMX is only for vanity or “artistic” projects.
Fact: Clients wouldn’t be happy with fluorescent lights that only turn off and on. Why would you? We’ll show how DMX opens the door to smooth dimming curves along the entire circuit, precise temperature tuning, and extensive/expansive/??? color mixing.

Myth: DMX will give my EC fits.
Fact: DMX simplifies installations by allowing for longer circuit runs than PoE while leveraging network infrastructure to expand across a site. Addressable fixtures make trouble-shooting an install easier. And DMX’s longevity and clear standards means there is a large community of programmers to install.

Covering these topics and more this session will help people stop being limited by what they think DMX is and understand how it can help

Navigating Budgets in Professional Lighting Design

Lighting design strategies can vary widely in terms of design, as well as cost. From project inception to fruition, lighting budgets must be considered carefully to not only ensure your competitive edge, but your vision becomes a reality.

Presented by AE Design, attendees at this session will gain a clearer understanding of how a typical project budget is shaped, who can help advocate for their choices, and how to make better decisions with lighting budgets top of mind.

Following this presentation, professional lighting design firms will feel well-prepared to achieve a client’s goals through strategic input and guidance on budgeting tactics such as: Initial project budget considerations and assessing typical costs, configuring the development of a budget, learning how to have proper cost analysis conversations, and implementing these strategies.

Session participants will understand where lighting typically fits into a project’s overall budget, obtain strategies for working with different lighting reps, and learn how to manage the procurement process while becoming further integrated within the Value Engineering process.

This granular breakdown explored in this presentation of the push and pull between various relationships throughout the design/construction process will advise designers to gauge initial budget constraints and how to adjust to new and sometimes unexpected changes.
