The Company Scorecard: What Companies Do to Retain Parents

Before the pandemic, retaining women talent in the lighting industry was strained. Women enter the workforce in the same capacity as their male counterparts. Yet if you look at company leadership, women are under-represented. At the 2018 IALD Enlighten conference presentation, the question was posed: Why do women leave lighting design? The presentation revealed most women leaving were mothers, and they left because their high demanding career collided with their seemingly insurmountable parental responsibilities. Fast forward to September 2020, the whole country took note when over 850,000 women dropped out of the workforce. It became clear during the pandemic that schools were moving to online only learning. In a moment of intense pressure, mothers stepped away from their salaries, careers, and stability to teach America's future generations. As author Reshma Saujauni puts it, "The pandemic had finally exposed the silent expectations placed on American working women, revealing them as painfully contradictory and completely impossible to meet." It's time to take a step back and evaluate how the lighting industry is supporting and retaining the valuable talent of working parents. Four years later, we will follow up with the question posed to employers: How do you support working parents? Like the 2018 IALD presentation, we will gather and present a series of survey responses from employers to understand their point of view, strategies, and positive results in keeping parents on the payroll. The survey will be anonymous to encourage honest responses.
